Energy suppliers overcharge British households by over £1.5bn
Millions of households across the UK could be owed a total of £1.5billion from their energy suppliers, new research by uSwitch has recently suggested.
Following one of the mildest winters on record, households in credit could be owed roughly £132 each, with 9 per cent able to claim back over £200, the report has revealed.
Home owners or renters who are paying gas and electricity bills by direct debit could find themselves in a position where energy suppliers have over-estimated the amount of energy they expect to be used. In this case, the account could be in credit, meaning that account holders have paid out more than they needed to.
Suppliers have their own procedures for credit claims, with some, but not all, offering automatic refunds.
Tom Lyon, of uSwitch, said: ‘After one of the UK’s mildest winters on record, millions of consumers may well have paid out hundreds of pounds for energy they simply didn’t use.
‘Under Ofgem rules, providers must repay any credit on request, so now is the time to read your meter, update your account and reclaim what you’re owed.
‘Today’s findings underline why providing regular, up to date meter readings is so important – it’s the only way to make sure you only pay for what you use and avoid the risk of falling into significant credit or debt.’
